Like the kindy1 left
behind
on the front verandah
instead of being kept
safely inside
was stolen,
a hillock by the
paddy-fields
disappeared at dawn.
Where-all didn�t rain
and shine
look for it!
My house sits
on the hip of a hill
that is still left.
Now-a-days
hills are all
daily-wagers
working on the
highway,
after lulling to
sleep
the bawling houses.
Pantalam-hill,
Pootra-hill
Puliara-hill,
Para-hill,
Chola-hill, Chanta-hill,
Palmyra-hill...when
the names are
called out from the
roster
everyone has to fall
in line,
march up to the lorry
and board it.
And get down where
ordered
and remain standing,
carrying on their
flattened heads
the eight-lane
Expressway.
Time will go fleeting
over their heads
�shooom...�
Shouldn�t budge!
O Wind, O Sea
O coconut fronds!
We are going to be
this side
and you all on that
side
Not likely
to see each other
again.
Like Narayani in
Basheer�s story
who threw a dry twig
up into the sky
You too must show
some sign
I�ll wait for it.
1.Kindy is a
bronze water container with a sprout, usually placed near the front
steps of a house, so that the persons coming from outside can wash their
feet before entering the house.

in the women�s part of the Central Jail, who is romantically inclined
towards the hero in the men�s prison, throws a dry twig up into the sky to
be seen above the separating wall, to announce her presence. The story
was made into a film by Adoor Gopalakrishnan, starring Mammootty.

കാറ്റേ കടലേ
ഉമ്മറക്കോലായില്‍നിന്ന്
രാത്രി എടുത്തുവയ്ക്കാന്‍ മറന്ന കിണ്ടി
കളവുപോയതുപോലെ
വയല്‍ക്കരയിലുള്ള ഒരു കുന്ന്
പുലര്‍ച്ചയ്ക്കു കാണാതായി.
മഴയും വെയിലും എവിടെയെല്ലാം തിരഞ്ഞു?
പിന്നെയും ബാക്കിയായ
ഒരു കുന്നിന്റെ പള്ളയ്ക്കാണ്
എന്റെ വീട്.
ഇപ്പോള്‍ കുന്നുകളെല്ലാം
റോഡുപണിക്കു പോകുന്നു,
കരയുന്ന വീടുകളെ
ഉറക്കിക്കിടത്തിക്കൊണ്ട്.
പന്തലംകുന്ന്, പൂത്രക്കുന്ന്
പുളിയാറക്കുന്ന്, പറക്കുന്ന്
ചോലക്കുന്ന്, ചന്തക്കുന്ന്
കരിമ്പനക്കുന്ന്.....
പേരു വിളിയ്ക്കുമ്പോള്‍
വരിവരിയായി വന്ന്
ലോറിയില്‍ കയറണം.
പറഞ്ഞസ്ഥലത്ത്
ഇറങ്ങണം.
നിരപ്പാക്കിയ തലയില്‍
എട്ടുവരിപ്പാത ചുമന്ന് നിന്നുകൊള്ളണം.
തലയ്ക്കുമീതെ കാലം
"ശൂം"ന്ന് പായും,
അനങ്ങരുത്!
കാറ്റേ,
കടലേ, തെങ്ങോലകളേ!
നമ്മള്‍ അപ്പുറത്തും
ഇപ്പുറത്തുമാകാന്‍ പോകുന്നു.
